Bergenias otherwise known as 'Elephant's Ears' work well in shady areas and add some colour to the early spring months as well as throughout the year with their large, robust leaves. There is a whole variety of different greens, many edged with red with some even turning completely red or purple during the winter months. There are even varigated types.

These plants are low maintenance, evergreen and can tolerate a wide variety of soils as long as they are not allowed to get too dry. Bergenias create an excellent architectural foil for other spring plants as well as flowering themselves. Flowers come in a range of pink tones as well as whites and even greens and are great at attracting those early pollinators.

Remove dead leaves and ensure mulching with compost at least once a year. Bergenias tend to be slow growers so they don't really need splitting up until the plant gets to a larger size usually after five years.
