Dianthus prefer well-drained, slightly alkaline soil in a sunny location and will grow in clumps. They can be successfully grown in neutral soil as long as they do not become waterlogged. Before planting I tend to enrich my soil with a generous handful of compost and sand and apply more sand to the surface of the soil once the garden pink has been planted. Dianthus will not grow in very acidic (peat) soils.

These hardy perennials flower from May to July although some varieties may have a shorter flowering season than others. Regular dead-heading may have a second shorter flowering spell in the autumn. Dianthus are reknown for their perfume and their blue-green narrow leaves. These plants are also drought-tolerant.

There are many types of dianthus but the ones listed below are mainly all border/garden pinks.
